Seahawks free agency roundup

Seattle Seahawks v Arizona Cardinals

The Seahawks are just over a week into perhaps one of the most peculiar free agency periods in NFL history.

With normal league operations being massively disrupted due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL has pushed forward with its offseason player movement despite an inability for certain key aspects of the process to take place.

Nevertheless, the Seahawks and every other team in the league have had to try to make things as normal as possible. The team has added seven new players to the roster in the last week with one addition coming via trade. They've also managed to re-sign two of their own free agents while four others have moved on to join new teams across the league.

Where do things stand for the Seahawks? Here's a roundup of the moves that have been made since free agency began on March 18.

Additions: TE Greg Olsen, CB Quinton Dunbar (trade w/ Washington), DE/LB Bruce Irvin, C/G B.J. Finney, OT Brandon Shell, OT Cedric Ogbuehi, G Chance Warmack, WR Phillip Dorsett.

-- Olsen and Dunbar are slightly different cases from the rest of the group. Olsen was released by the Carolina Panthers last month and was free to sign with any team immediately. He chose Seattle after visits with the Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills. His addition will also not impact next year's compensatory draft pick formula as he was released by Carolina.

Dunbar was acquired from Washington earlier this week in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Dunbar is a former college wide receiver that has become a full-time starter at cornerback and had a career-high four interceptions last season for Washington.

-- Irvin rejoins the Seahawks after spending the last five seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Panthers. Irvin was Seattle's first-round pick in 2012 and spent four seasons with the team.

-- Finney was a former undrafted free agent signing by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Kansas State. He's been a reserve interior line option for the Steelers that was stuck by three strong starters in David DeCastro, Maurkice Pouncey and Ramon Foster. He's expected to compete for a starting role with Seattle.

-- Shell was a fifth-round pick of the Jets in 2016 and has been the team's full-time starter at right tackle the last three seasons. He will presumably compete for that job with Seattle.

-- Ogbuehi was was a former first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015 that spent four seasons with the team before moving on to Jacksonville. Ogbuehi was a full-time starter for two seasons with the Bengals before losing the job in 2018. He was a backup last season for the Jaguars.

-- Warmack was a first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2013 that was out of football last season. He won a Super Bowl as a backup with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 and was college teammates with Seahawks right guard D.J. Fluker at Alabama. Warmack and Fluker were selected with consecutive picks in the draft by Tennessee and the San Diego Chargers in 2013.

-- Dorsett was a first-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2015. He was traded to the New England Patriots in 2017 and has spent the last three seasons with the team. Dorsett is a speed receiver that had a career-high five touchdowns last season.

Re-signed: DT Jarran Reed, TE Luke Willson, TE Jacob Hollister (2nd-rd RFA tender), C Joey Hunt (RFA tender), WR David Moore (RFA Tender), DE Branden Jackson (RFA tender).

-- Reed re-signed with Seattle on a two-year deal reportedly worth $23 million in total on the first night of free agency.

-- Willson re-signed with Seattle on a one-year deal on the second night of free agency and will provide depth to a group that has Will Dissly returning from a torn Achilles and a 35-year old Olsen on the roster as well.

Departures: OT George Fant (NY Jets), DE Quinton Jefferson (Buffalo), OT Germain Ifedi (Chicago), DT Al Woods (Jacksonville).

-- Fant was the first departure from Seattle's 2019 roster. He reached an agreement with the Jets on a three-year deal worth $30 million.

-- Jefferson reached an agreement on a two-year deal with the Buffalo Bills.

-- Ifedi is signing a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears.

-- Woods signed a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Outstanding FAs: DE Jadeveon Clowney, G Mike Iupati, QB Geno Smith, WR Josh Gordon (suspended), WR Jaron Brown, RB Marshawn Lynch, DE Ezekiel Ansah, LB Mychal Kendricks, CB Akeem King, RB C.J. Prosise, RB Robert Turbin, CB Neiko Thorpe, LB Dekoda Watson.

-- Clowney remains the highest profile free agent from Seattle's 2019 roster and is still unsigned. Clowney has reportedly not found the free agent market for his services as vibrant as he had anticipated and may be tracking toward signing a one-year deal somewhere.

Clowney is one of the players most heavily affected by the league shutdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. He had surgery to repair a sports hernia after the season and teams are unable to bring in players to the facilities for evaluations and physicals as a part of the NFL's response to the virus. Clowney, Cam Newton and other stars who could benefit from having teams get up-to-date looks at their situations are not currently permitted to do so.

The team that knows the most about his current circumstances are the Seahawks and the familiarity with the team may give Seattle a big advantages. The Seahawks remain in need of pass rushing help and Clowney's return would be a big boost for the team's defensive line outlook.
